Back to basics: denim

boyfriend jeans

It’s that time of the year again … dragging out jeans from the back of your wardrobe only to dump them onto the floordrobe in disgust when you realize they don’t go with any of your new clothes.

My advice? Keep the 501s and ditch the rest. This season, denim is either faded or in acid wash – or a classic shade in well-fitting shape.

J Brand has come up trumps with a new boyfriend jean – after discontinuing their last boyfriend jean two years ago. The Aidan boyfriend jean has a flattering fit on the thighs but carries on straight down to turned-up ankles. Unlike previous boyfriend jeans, the fit is glamorous enough to look good with converse or heels. Wear with a racer-back top and strappy sandals for summer parties.

The white jean trend is always a tricky one, but as it crops up every summer, I suggest you learn how to manage it asap. Rag & Bone make it easy by doing a bright white skinny jean that will look deliciously summery with a loose-fit floral top, or a gingham checked shirt left untucked. They will look pretty at any summer event – but beware of grass stains and refuse to sit anywhere that isn’t covered by a picnic blanket (preferably one that compliments your look).

The best on-trend jeans around are basic, bright and bold. Go straight to Paige’s jeans for an unusual dark gray floral that won’t show any grass stains, or try Current/Elliott for a typically summery white floral pair.

Patterned jeans look best when paired with a contrast pattern top, or try color-blocking by wearing a simple top in a contrast color to the jeans. If you’re trying out bold prints, stay clear of statement jewelry, but feel free to explore with elaborate eye makeup.

Of course, denim doesn’t need to be confined to your jeans. Bring in the summer with a staple light denim jacket. This year’s denim jackets are tight, short, and bright. Say goodbye to the Shoreditch-esque oversized jackets of last year and get your hands on J Brand’s Atomic denim jacket. It falls slightly below the waist and will look great with anything from a maxi to a bodycon.

I am in desperate need of some updated denim and really appreciate you sharing these trends. I typically go for a dark wash in a jegging type of fit.

I’ve always been a fan of denim. Jeans are basically all I wear. I don’t care if it’s in style or not. It’s comfy to me, so I go for it!

I practically live in jeans and I never toss any of them. I can reuse, repurpose, or they can even come back into being on trend. Granted some adjustments and changes may need to be made to make them fashionable for the newest trend. Sometimes the cut changes etc.
One thing I do not buy much of are colored jeans. Maybe a pair or two but these often make me feel weird when I wear them.

While I love summer, I’m looking forward to jeans season. I think I’m falling in love with the boyfriend jean all over again. I just put on my bf’s jeans and loved them.

I love all my colored jeans. They are comfortable and also look a little more formal than blue jeans.

I absolutely love my classic blue jeans. I have to wear dress pants all week long, so on the weekends – it’s jeans or pajama pants (pj pants are only when staying home though!)

Denim is always perfect! It’s durable, easy to accessorize and always fashionable. I live in my denim till it’s naturally distressed. Thankfully, I love the look.

I love denim. I have a hard time wearing it in the summer since it’s so hot. Can’t wait to get some for the fall.
